PSHE & RSE at North Wheatley 

At North Wheatley, our PSHE/RSE and RE Curriculum supports pupils understanding of the 9 protected characteristics, supported by special events, weekly worships and choice of books and texts used across the curriculum. 

The 9 Protected Characteristics

At North Wheatley, we teach children that we all have characteristics and nine of them are protected. The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation because of the protected characteristics that we all have.

Under the Equality Act, these are nine protected characteristics:

1. Age
2. Disability
3. Gender Reassignment
4. Race 
5. Religion or Belief
6. Marriage or Civil Partnership
7. Sex
8. Sexual Orientation
9. Pregnancy and Maternity

Protected Characteristics Through Reading

Our PSHE Reading Spine features a range of carefully selected books that support with the teaching of the 9 Protected Characteristics across all key stages. At North Wheatley, we pride ourselves on our wonderful array of books that become the ‘windows and mirrors’ into the wider world. Through stories and discussions, we can explore, experience and appreciate our wonderfully diverse world.
