The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a key stage 2 assessment taken by pupils at the end of Year 4 (in June). Its purpose is to ensure that children’s times tables knowledge is at the expected level. In the 2024/2025 academic year, the MTC is statutory for all primary schools.
The MTC is an online test consisting of 25 questions on times tables from 2 to 12. Pupils have 6 seconds to answer each question, with a 3-second pause between questions. Questions on the 6, 7, 8, 9, and 12 times tables appear more frequently. All questions are randomly generated according to the MTC rules.
To prepare effectively, we recommend starting early and practising times tables daily. Using resources like Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) for 10–15 minutes a day helps children build fluency, gain confidence, and become ready for the test.
